11 Catamounts Named to Phil Steele Preseason All-SoCon Football Teams

By Daniel Hooker

Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations

Eleven Catamount football players collected a total of 13 preseason All-Southern Conference accolades from the Phil Steele publication on Wednesday, with Calvin Jones collecting third-team preseason All-America honors as a kick returner from the same outlet.

Jones added a second preseason All-America honor to his ledger while also joining Raphael Williams on the first-team offense, both as wide receivers. Jones was also listed as the first-team kick returner and a second-team selection as an overall all-purpose back to tally three total recognitions. Williams also collected first-team All-SoCon honors from the league’s head coaches at the SoCon Media Day.

In addition to Jones, four Catamounts landed on the Phil Steele preseason All-SoCon squad that included offensive lineman Tyler Smith, defensive back Andreas Keaton, and placekicker Richard McCollum. Smith was a first-team all-league honoree by the SoCon head coaches with both Keaton and McCollum tallying second-team nods.

Seniors TJ Jones at running back and Cameron McCutcheon at defensive back both earned third-team plaudits, with four – quarterback Carlos Davis, offensive lineman Christian Coulter, defensive lineman KJ Milner, and defensive back Jacob Harris – each earning fourth-team preseason honors from the publication.

Both season and single-game tickets, as well as game day parking for Western Carolina’s 2022 home schedule, are on sale now through the WCU Athletics Ticket Office on the first floor of the Ramsey Center, by phone at (828) 227-2401, and online at CatamountSports.com/BuyTickets.

Catamount football held its first official team meeting of the 2022 fall camp on Wednesday morning with the squad’s first practice slated for Thursday morning on the turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field. Each of WCU's preseason football practices is open to the public. It is respectfully requested, though, that spectators observe from the stadium seating area and avoid being either on the field or the sidelines for safety. Practice times are subject to change.
