The Hive was buzzing on Tuesday, Aug. 30 when the varsity Hayesville volleyball team welcomed their rival from Murphy.

A very loud Jacket Nation cheered every point in the first set as the two Smoky Mountain Conference powerhouses battled it out. Hayesville was able to limit mistakes and capitalize on the ones the Lady Bulldogs made and won the race to 25 to get the set win, 25-22.

Set two was a rollercoaster that had Hayesville fans going from standing up and cheering to sitting with heads in hands, back to screaming in appreciation. The Lady Jackets used finesse while Murphy used a power attack. With both fanbases on edge and hanging on every hit, the Lady Bulldogs managed to even the match up with a 25-23 set victory.

In set three, Hayesville seemed to still be stunned from the result of the second set. Murphy got a stranglehold on momentum and cruised to a 25-14 win to go up 2-1 in the match.

The Lady Jackets tried to stop the bleeding in the fourth set. Hayesville was able to be more competitive in the set, going on scoring runs of their own to slow Murphy down, but it was too little too late and the Lady Bulldogs held on to get the 25-21 set win to clinch the 3-1 match win.

The conference loss gives the Lady Jackets an 0-1 SMC record and a 5-2 record overall. Hayesville will try to get back in the win column Thursday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. when they take on the Lady Maroon Devils in Swain County.
