Appeals Court agrees to expedite redistricting appeal

A federal Appeals Court has agreed to expedite the review of a lawsuit challenging North Carolina's new state Senate election map. The plaintiffs argue that two districts in the 2023 Senate map violate the Voting Rights Act by diluting Black voting power.

Despite a rejection by US District Judge James Dever for an injunction blocking the map, the plaintiffs sought an emergency review from the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals. The appellate judges set a schedule for brief submissions by all parties, aiming for a decision by February 15.

The lawsuit challenges the Senate map, alleging racial gerrymandering, while state legislative leaders oppose the expedited timeline, emphasizing ongoing primary elections and potential disruptions.
