Argentina Wins a Thriller

Argentina won the World Cup yesterday, the country's third title, outlasting defending champion France in penalty kicks in one of the most exciting finals in recent years. Argentine superstar Lionel Messi scored two goals in what he said will likely be his last World Cup appearance.

Argentina controlled much of the game, going up 2-0 with goals in the 23rd and 36th minutes by Messi and Ángel Di María. The score held until the 80th minute, when 23-year-old French star Kylian Mbappé scored, and then followed up with a stunning goal less than 90 seconds later (w/video).

The match went into extra time, with Messi again scoring in the 108th minute, and being countered by a Mbappé goal with just minutes left to play, sending the outcome to penalty kicks. Argentina won the round 4-2, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez stopping the second shot from France.
