Asst. Athletic Director, Sports Comm.

University of Georgia Athletic Association

Georgia will honor its 2004 College World Series squad this Saturday before the Ole Miss game at Foley Field while the annual Lettermen’s Day will be Sunday, May 5 during the Vanderbilt series.

This Saturday as part of the annual Foley Fest, the No. 24 Bulldogs (27-9, 7-8 SEC) will honor the 2004 team that finished 45-23 including 19-11 in the SEC. They captured the SEC title, won a thrilling NCAA Regional over Clemson at Foley Field, then beat Georgia Tech in an NCAA Super Regional in Atlanta and finished tied for third at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

The 2004 squad, led by National and SEC Coach of the Year David Perno, featured five players who earned All-SEC honors that season: Josh Smith (3B), Will Startup (LHP), Justin Holmes (SS), Josh Morris (1B) and Marshall Szabo (2B). Morris and Joey Side (OF) were named 2004 Freshman All-Americans. After the season, Szabo and Holmes along with Clint Sammons (C), Paul Lubrano (LHP), Bo Lanier (RHP) and Michael Hyle (RHP) were selected in the Major League Baseball draft. Sammons, a sixth-round pick of the Atlanta Braves, reached the Majors in 2007 and played three years with the Braves. Hyle, who went 8-2 with a 2.99 ERA in 16 starts for the 2004 Bulldogs, is slated to throw out the first pitch.

The annual Foley Fest is a pre-game event that is free and open to the public. It will be held Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Rutherford Street next to Foley Field. Fans will be treated to live music, inflatables and yard games. Please note that Rutherford Street will be closed for vehicles from 10:45 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The annual Georgia Baseball Lettermen’s Day is set for Sunday, May 5 when the Bulldogs battle the Commodores. Bulldogs from as far back as the 1960s are expected to attend. A trio of lettermen will be honored before the game. Georgia recognizes the annual Charley Trippi Distinguished Lettermen Award recipient along with the Tom Cousins Outstanding Athletic Achievement Award winner and the Cheek & Templeton Prestigious Alumni Award recipient.
