Congratulations to Belle Hardwick of women's lacrosse and Caleb McCurry of men's tennis on earning Mountain Lion of the Week honors.The Mountain Lions men's tennis team has won eight straight matches, with all eight being Conference Carolinas contests. On Monday (Apr. 15) Young Harris took on North Greenville, and overpowered the Crusaders, winning 6-1.
Caleb McCurry picked up a doubles win with teammate Rodrigo Mendoza and a singles win over his opponent (6-3 and 7-6). Their next opponent was Chowan University (Apr. 20), and the Mountain Lions took care of business once more, swamping the Hawks, 7-0. McCurry was victorious in doubles with his teammate Mendoza (6-3) and again racked up another singles win; with the victory, the Mountain Lions clinched at least a share of the conference title, with a chance to be crowned regular season champions the following Monday.Young Harris squared off against Barton College on Monday (Apr. 22) morning at home, with a lot on the line. McCurry and the Mountain Lions did what they have done since conference play began almost a month ago, they took down their opponent and claimed victory. Playing the Bulldogs, McCurry won his doubles match with partner Mondoza and followed that win up with his own singles victory, taking down his opponent (6-1 and 6-3). With the win over Barton, the Young Harris College men's tennis team claimed the first ever Conference Carolinas Championship in Mountain Lions history in just their first season in the new conference and with their new coach, Marcy O'Connor. Over the three-game stretch,McCurry won all six matches that he played in, winning each doubles match, and each singles match, earning him Mountain Lion of the Week honors.
Belle Hardwick and the women's lacrosse team have won six straight games, with the big victory coming yesterday over Converse University. Fifth year senior Belle Hardwick has been imposing her will all season long and has been a great leader of her team on and off the field.The Mountain Lions played two games over the past week, and had the running clock enforced in each contest. In the game versus Lees-McCrae College (Apr. 18), YHC dominated from start to finish, and midfielder Belle Hardwick was a huge factor. Hardwick scored 10 points for Young Harris, netting four goals, and dishing out six assists. The Mountain Lions swamped the Bobcats, winning 26-2, while posting two straight scoreless periods defensively. With that win, the Mountain Lions earned the third seed in the Conference Carolinas women's lacrosse tournament.On Monday (Apr. 23) evening, Young Harris hosted Converse University and dominated their opponent once more. In the game, the Mountain Lions dominated the Valkyries, winning 20-9. Hardwick scored six points on four goals and two assists to help Young Harris advance to the Conference Carolinas Semifinals that will be played on Thursday (Apr. 25) in Mount Olive, North Carolina. Hardwick scored 16 points in two games, with eight goals and eight assists, earning her Mountain Lion of the Week honors.
