Catamount Volleyball to Face UNCG on Wednesday

Western Carolina volleyball opens a four-match road swing on Wednesday night as the Catamounts head to in-state foe UNCG for a 7 p.m. contest inside Fleming Gymnasium.
Wednesday’s match will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with free live stats available on catamountsports.com.
WCU is 11-7 overall and 4-2 in SoCon action after splitting a pair of home matches last weekend against Tennessee league foes, Chattanooga and ETSU. The Catamounts swept the Mocs on Friday night aided by Merry Gebel’s second straight 17-kill performance but saw a two-match winning streak snapped on Saturday by the Bucs. The Catamounts currently sit in a three-way tie for second place with both Wofford and Samford with matching 4-2 league records having split the first meetings with the two, falling to the Terriers in Spartanburg and downing Samford at home in the league opener.
Gebel leads WCU and ranks fifth in the SoCon in overall attack percentage (.273) while ranks fourth in kills per set at 3.56. Two Catamounts – libero Destinee Dorsey and Bailey Hartsough – rank sixth and 10th, respectively, defensively with averages of 3.66 and 3.08 digs per set.
UNCG is 8-11 on the season and 2-4 in league matches after a pair of losses to ETSU and Chattanooga last weekend. The Spartans have league wins against Mercer and The Citadel. Ella Voegele ranks third in the conference in digs per set with 4.18.
The Catamounts and Spartans face off for the 59th time with WCU leading the all-time series 31-27. UNCG won both matches last season.
Following Wednesday’s midweek tilt with UNCG, the Catamounts visit Furman on Friday (Oct. 14) evening to end the first half of the conference slate.
