On Friday, January 26, Hayesville High School recognized former Yellow Jacket Josh Cottrell by retiring his number 5 jersey which will displayed in the trophy case alongside other jerseys belonging to other great HHS athletes.
During his time at HHS, Cottrell was a part of two Smoky Mountain Conference championships, two sweet 16 appearances and one elite eight appearance.
Cottrell's individual accolades include:
Four time All-Smoky Mountain Conference selections
2018 SMC Player of the Year
Three time All-Western North Carolina team selections
Two time All-District First Team honoree
Two time HHS Male Athlete of the Year
All-time leading HHS scorer with 2,005 points
50th all-time scorer in NCHSAA history
School record 704 points as a junior.
Single game HHS scoring record with 46 points
HHS record nine 3-pointers in a game.
Most 3-pointers all time at HHS with 323 (Sixth all-time in NCHSAA history)
After earning his PGA Management degree, Cottrell has returned to the HHS campus to serve as a volunteer coach for both the JV and varsity Yellow Jacket basketball teams.
For Jacket Nation, the only shocking element to Cottrell's jersey retirement was that it took this long to happen.
