Ethan Stamps and Grace Young Championed as Mountain Lions of the Week

By: Spencer Mathis

Ethan Stamps and the Mountain Lions baseball team have continuously been an opposing force to other schools all season. Over the past six games, YHC is undefeated, defeating each Conference Carolinas opponent in their path. Last week, Young Harris played three games, with the Tuesday affair being canceled. The Mountain Lions took on Southern Wesleyan University in a three game weekend series, and dominated the Warriors in each contest, outscoring SWU 50-13. In game one of the series, Stamps went 2-5 from the batter's box, while picking up a walk and scoring two runs in the 17-2 victory over the Warriors. Game two of the series was Stamps' best performance, as he came to the plate five times; he recorded two hits, drew two walks, drove in three runs, and came around to score two times in route to a 13-3 win over the Warriors.

In the final game of the series, Stamps once again posted a .400 BA, going 2-5 from the plate; he once again recorded two RBIs, drew two BB, and came around to score three Young Harris runs on the way to another dominating Mountain Lions victory, this time winning 20-8. Overall, Ethan Stamps went 6-13, with a homerun, two doubles, five walks drawn, and 5 RBIs, earning him Mountain Lion of the week honors.

Similarly, Grace Young and the Mountain Lions softball team have been on a roll this season, and most importantly, during the final stretch of the regular season. Young Harris has won six of their last seven games played and are an impressive 14-6 in Conference Carolinas play. Just last week, the Mountain Lions softball squad played six games, and won five of them. Young Harris played three total series, with their opponents being: Erskine College, Southern Wesleyan University, and Emmanuel University. In the Erskine series, Young went a combined 3-7 at the plate, with one walk drawn, one RBI, and three runs scored; she also pitched the second game of each series, and against Erskine, Young threw all seven innings for YHC surrendering just two runs, while striking out four Flying Fleet hitters. Against SWU, Grace Young started game two in the circle for YHC, once again pitching seven strong innings; this time, Young gave up just two runs again, and struck out seven Warriors batters on 130 pitches.

Finally, in the last series of the week against Emmanuel, Young went 3-8 from the batter's box and scored a run for the Mountain Lions. After losing game one, YHC called upon Grace Young to start game two as the Mountain Lions pitcher, and she once again pitched a complete game in a winning effort; in the game, Young picked up her eighth win of the season in the circle for Young Harris, and her third victory of the week, as she earned Mountain Lion of the week honors.
