FBLA hosts inaugural fundraiser

It's rare to see a group of high schoolers volunteering their time, much less on a Saturday morning. However, the members of Hayesville High School's Future Business Leaders of America Club are a rare group. That determination resulted in the club's first fundraiser for the March of Dimes on Saturday, May 14.
Bobbie Jones, HHS teacher and FBLA sponsor said this year's group has not been afraid of work. Even when they were hit with curveballs, the club regrouped and moved forward.
Original plans were for the event to be a bike-a-thon, but despite the teams' best efforts, they were forced to scratch the idea. After brainstorming, the club settled on a fundraising walk on the track around the football field at Frank R. Long stadium. Weather forecasts threw yet another wrench into the FBLA plans and the event was moved into the HHS gym.
Club sponsor Will Penland said the kids took charge in planning the event. Penland also praised this year's club in particular for their desire to do things to benefit not only the club, but also the community.
That support for the community was reciprocated by Carlotta's restaurant who sponsored the event.
