The Southeastern Conference has announced that University of Georgia fifth-year middle blocker Sophie Fischer has been named to the 2024 Preseason All-SEC Volleyball Team.
Additionally, Georgia was picked to finish fourth by the league’s head coaches, garnering 148 points in the SEC Volleyball Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Texas (196 points, 14 first-place votes), Florida (174/1), and Kentucky (173) were picked ahead of the Bulldogs.
Fischer, the reigning SEC Player of the Year, will play her final collegiate season in 2024. She transferred to Georgia from Kentucky prior to the 2022 season and has since been named the 2023 SEC Player of the Year, 2023 AVCA All-American, and a two-time All-SEC and All-Southeast Region performer.
Nationally, Fischer ranked 11th in points per set as the nation's highest-scoring middle in 2023, registering 5.26 points per set (594 total points). She ranked 30th in kills per set (4.13 kills/set) and 24th in blocks per set (1.32 blocks/set).She finished the season as the league's top scorer. She finished top 10 in the SEC in kills per set, service aces per set (0.40 aces/set), blocks per set, and hitting percentage (.324 average).
Georgia concluded the 2023 season in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Provo, Utah with a 19-12 record. It was the second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the Bulldogs, the first time UGA has made back-to-back appearances since 1994 and 1995.
The upcoming 2024 season kicks off in Tallahassee, Florida, at the FSU Tournament Aug. 30-Sept. 1. The 2024 campaign will be the eighth under the direction of Tom Black.
Georgia bolstered its roster in the offseason, adding transfers Bianna Muoneke (outside hitter, Texas A&M), Erykah Lovett (outside hitter, Tennessee), and Kendal Kemp (middle blocker, Auburn).
