Franklin Shuts Down Hayesville

Hayesville's volleyball fans filled The Hive on Tuesday, Aug. 23 to watch the Lady Jackets take on the Lady Panthers from neighboring Franklin. Unfortunately for the home team, the visitors were not great guests, defeating all three Hayesville teams.

The varsity Lady Jackets showed a will to fight as they stayed with Franklin to start the first set. Hayesville found themselves tied 9-9, but then the visitors started to pull away. Franklin outscored the Lady Jackets 11-5 down the stretch to win the set 25-14.

Losing the opening set didn't seem to kill the home team's spirit as they opened the second set with a 4-1 lead. Franklin found their groove and the foes found themselves tied 7-7. The Lady Panthers tried to pull away, but Hayesville kept fighting and closed to within 1 point with a 17-16 score. Unfortunately, that was as close as the black and Vegas gold brigade would get and Franklin took a 2-0 lead with the 25-19 set-victory.

Set three followed the same pattern as the two previous stanzas, with the teams swapping points back and forth on a consistent basis. Once again, around the 10-point mark, the Lady Panthers seemed to catch another gear and rode the momentum wave to a 25-18 win in the set and clinched the 3-0 match sweep.

For the JV Lady Jackets, things got off to a promising start. In a hotly contested opening set, Hayesville was able to push through for a 27-25 win. Franklin came roaring back in a big way in set two, evening up the match score with a 25- 18 victory.

In the third set, Hayesville got the first point, but that lead was short-lived. The Lady Panthers scored the next 4 and used that momentum to win the set 15-8 and the match 2-1.

Hayesville Middle School opened their season against a Franklin team that had size most varsity teams would admire. The Lady Panthers quickly took a 1-0 advantage with a 25-10 win in set one. In set two, the Lady Jackets battled hard and kept things close, but Franklin was able to end things with a 25-17 victory.

Hayesville will host Highlands on Thursday, Aug. 24. JV will play at 5 p.m. with varsity following.
