On Tuesday, Feb. 27, the Lady Yellow Jackets began their quest for a state title by hosting a round-one game of the NCHSAA tournament. Hayesville swept the season-series against the Lady Knights and picked up a third win over Robbinsville in the semi-finals of the Smoky Mountain Conference tournament.

The game was an instant classic that saw two very evenly matched teams. In an almost bucket-for-bucket affair, the Smoky Mountain Conference foes left it all all the court. Robbinsville held a slim 15-13 lead after the opening stanza and by the half, Hayesville only trailed by 1 point with a score of 35-24.

The Lady Knights continued to play from ahead in the third quarter, but Hayesville managed to stay within striking distance. As the teams huddled before the final quarter, Robbinsville was up 37-34.

Hayesville, unrattled, brought the fight in the fourth quarter as they tried to defend their home court. Foul trouble caught up to Robbinsville an the Lady Jackets were able to find scoring opportunities as well as find ways to get to the free throw line. While Hayesville had struggled all game long at the charity stripe, Lady Jacket shooters were accurate when it counted in the closing seconds to secure the 49-45 comeback win.
