Hayesville Puts Two Teams In Conference Tourney Finals

It was a big night for Jacket Nation in Cherokee on Tuesday, February 20. Both HHS varsity teams were in action with a chance to advance to the final round and both teams accomplished their mission.

The Lady Yellow Jackets were first up as they faced off with Robbinsville. Things looked bleak for Hayesville in the first quarter as the Lady Knights built up a 12-4 lead by the end of the opening stanza. In the second, the Lady Jackets found their groove and the bottom of the bucket to fight their way to an 18-18 tie at the half.

Hayesville was again solid on both ends of the court in the third quarter and entered the fourth up by 10 points. As the two teams battled to the final buzzer, Robbinsville made a run with 11 fourth-quarter points, but it wasn't enough and the Lady Jackets won 46-35 to advance to the championship.

It was then time for the boys to face off with Swain County. After going winless in the SMC in the regular season, the Jackets shocked many with a round one win over Robbinsville. Round two proved the opening-round win was no fluke. Hayesville went toe-to-toe with a team that had defeated them twice and came out the 59-47 victors.

With the win, the gutsy team that several had written off, advanced to fight for a SMC tournament championship.

Both teams will have to go through Cherokee if they want to secure the hardware. The host school saw both of their teams advance to the finals. Championship action will take place in Cherokee on Friday, with the girls set to tip-off at 6 p.m. and the boys game will follow.
