After dropping their season-opener to Tuscola, Hayesville High's JV volleyball squad looked to get into the win column Tuesday, Aug.16 when they hosted the Lady Mustangs from Smoky Mountain High School in Sylva.

Whatever jitters Hayesville had on opening night seemed to be a distant memory in the first set. Good communication and selfless play led to the Lady Jackets getting some hard-fought points following lengthy volleys. The strong start continued through the set with Hayesville getting the 25-16 win.

After going up 12-6 in the second set, the Lady Jackets seemed to be on their way to an easy match win. However, Smoky Mountain made a run and it was soon 12-12. It was back and forth for the next few volleys before Hayesville went on a 9-3 run to take the set 25-19 and the match 2-0.

Strong serving from Bryleigh Krieger and Raylyn Taylor down the stretch helped the Lady Jackets secure their first win of the season.

Bryliegh Krieger: 4 kills, 5 aces, 3 digs, 1 block

Olivia Giddens: 3 kills, 5 aces, 3 digs

Ava Shook: 2 kills, 3 aces, 3 digs

Hayesville will host Franklin at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18.
