On Friday, Dec. 15, the basketball teams from Hayesville High School began their hunt for a Smokey Mountain Conference championship by hosting Swain in the first conference matchup of the season.
The only loss for Hayesville on the evening came in the varsity boys game. Swain County had a definate size advantage and the Maroon Devils' ball movement was very Yellow Jacket-esque. Swain was able to catch Hayesville's defense leaning which opened up looks at the basket. The Devils held off a late rally from Hayesville to defeat the Jackets 51-39.

For the varsity Lady Jackets, it was a roller coaster evening. Hayesville looked strong early, building a first-quarter lead, but the Lady Devils kept fighting. With head coach Chad McClure absent due to his son's college graduation, assistant Amanda Thompson was charged with a game plan to hold off the visitors. Thompson and the Lady Jackets were successful and in the closing minutes, Hayesville pulled away for the 43-29 victory.

The JV Yellow Jackets added to the win total for Hayesville with a 53-31 victory. For the JV Lady Jackets, their first game of the season ended in a 33-14 win over Swain.
All teams will be in action Tuesday, Dec. 19 in The Hive when Hayesville hosts Cherokee.
