Hayesville welcomes Georgia team to The Hive

On Thursday, June 23, the HHS Yellow Jacket basketball teams welcomed the Dawson County Tigers from Dawsonville, GA for a scrimmage session. It was a matchup of brothers as the Tigers are headed up by Todd Cottrell, brother of head Yellow Jacket Mike Cottrell.
The format for the evening saw the varsity squads face off in 20 minutes segments, then the court was cleared for the JV teams to battle. This rotation continued for roughly an hour and a half.
Coaches would agree on virtual scenarios to see how their teams would react to game-like situations. One of the varsity sessions saw the Jackets come from behind in the final minute to take the "win." By the intensity on the court, it would have been easy to forget the event was just a magnified practice.
Along with a couple dozen of Jacket Nation members, the Yellow Jacket's previous two point guards were also in attendance. Kolbe Ashe, who led the Jackets to the state championship earlier this year, and his predecessor, multiple HHS record holder Josh Cottrell, sat courtside observing the team.
"I think the guys are going to be good," said Ashe. "It's weird to be sitting here and watching, but I like what I see." As Ashe watched closely, he said it was apparent that guys were adapting to their new roles.
After the hard-fought scrimmage, all players lined up for handshakes of respect and appreciation.
