HHS splits matches with visiting Lady Braves
As the season winds down, Hayesville High School's volleyball teams played host to Cherokee in a Smoky Mountain Conference showdown.
The JV Lady Jackets came into the night looking to keep their unbeaten conference streak. Hayesville came out in the first set looking like the powerhouse they have become. The Lady Jackets took set one 25-12.
Hayesville kept the upper-hand in the second set, never giving Cherokee a shot. A 25-16 set win gave the Lady Jackets the match victory, keeping their undefeated streak alive. To date. the JV team has only lost one set in conference play.
With Jacket Nation riding high from the win, the varsity teams took to the floor. Set one set the tone for the night as the teams exchanged points. The race to 25 had fans on the edge of their seats as volleys meant more and more. Eventually, the Lady Braves came away with the slim 25-23 win.
Set two was much like the first, with the foes exchanging scoring blows. Hayesville was able to stay close, but Cherokee managed to cap off the set with a 25-21 win. The third set was again a competitive one that saw the momentum bounce to each side of the net. Much like the second set, the Lady Braves sealed the deal with another 25-21 set win.
The loss is a shining example of the varsity squad's season. Hayesville's losses are often the result of sets where the Lady Jackets lose by 5 or fewer points. As a result, their 11-8 record doesn't necessarily reflect their level of competitiveness this season.
Next up for HHS will head to Robbinsville on Tuesday, Oct. 11 and will end their regular season in The Hive Thursday, Oct. 13 against Andrews.
