Imran Khan Shot

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was shot in the leg yesterday at a protest march, in what his supporters say was an assassination attempt.

The former cricket star, 70, was giving a speech in the eastern Punjab province in a push to bring snap elections to the country after being ousted from power in April after losing a no-confidence vote. Khan maintains mass public support and had been traveling in a large vehicle convoy heading toward the capital.

The lone gunman claimed Khan was misleading the people and his motive stemmed from Khan’s convoy playing music during the call to prayer that summons Muslims to the mosque five times daily. He was arrested at the scene. At least one man was killed and several more injured in the attack.

The shooting is the latest attack on a Pakistani leader in a country with a long history of political violence. See footage of the attempt here (warning—sensitive content).
