Jackets and Bulldogs evenly matched in Hayesville

The HHS Yellow Jacket soccer team played host to Smoky Mountain Conference rival Murphy on Wednesday, Sept 21 at Frank R. Long Memorial Stadium. The long-time foes battled through two halves and two overtime periods to end the evening with a 2-2 tie.

Both teams found scoring success in the first half of the match and entered the halftime period tied up 1-1. The tug of war continued in the second half with each team finding the back of the net to end regulation knotted up at 2-2.

Neither team could manufacture a score in the first overtime period so officials reset for a second overtime attempt. Once again the defenses held strong, stopping any hope of scoring. The match was officially ended, giving the rivals a 2-2 tie.

A pair of juniors combined for the Yellow Jackets score with Jacopo Matticari and Zach Townsend each netting a goal. On the other end of the field, senior Connor Rexroad ended the match with 7 saves and two goals allowed.

The Jackets will be at home again on Monday, Sept. 26 to host the Andrews Wildcats at 4 p.m.
