Jackets shutout by Swain
By Travis Dockery
The Hayesville Yellow Jacket varsity baseball team ended the pre-Spring Break part of their schedule with a road trip to Swain County on Thursday, April 7. Maroon Devil pitching proved to be too tough for Hayesville as the Jackets fell 4-0.
The game was gridlocked until the bottom of the third inning when Swain broke through with 3 runs to put the Jackets behind the eight ball. Scoring again halted until the bottom of the sixth when the Devils tacked on a single run, the last score of the game.
Hayesville managed 6 hits over the seven inning contest with Braxton Cherry, Dakota Matheson, Avery Leatherwood, Mason Cook, Cade Denton and Kyle Lunsford all swatting pitches for base hits. Cook, Denton and Lunsford also reached base via walks.
On the mound, Cherry went the distance for the Jackets. The junior gave up 3 earned runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out five.
Hayesville continues their season on Tuesday, April 19 as they travel to Cherokee County to take on the Eagles in Hiwassee Dam. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
