Young Harris College men's basketball coach Jeremy Currier announced the addition of Jerel Chavis as an assistant coach for the Mountain Lions.

Chavis comes to the Enchanted Valley after a season as the director of player development at NCAA Division I's Austin Peay University in Clarksville, Tennessee.

"I am thrilled to welcome Jerel to Young Harris as he comes highly recommended from some close friends in the coaching profession," said Currier. "Jerel is passionate about being in the gym and working closely to develop players, and is someone that we will count on to mentor the young men in our program on and off the court."

Prior to working with the Governors, Chavis played overseas for 12 years which took him to far-flung locales from Australia, Estonia, Singapore, Slovakia, Italy, Austria and Indonesia, among other stops.

"I am excited to be joining the Young Harris College basketball program and community," said Chavis. "Coach Currier's passion for the game and how he really cares about his players on and off the court attracted me here. I am excited to get to campus and be around the players this week."

Chavis played at Aiken Community College and Delaware State University where he earned his bachelor's degree in psychology before embarking on his professional career.

Chavis and his wife Megan has one son, Jaxan.
