After a dominant win over Madison in week one, the JV Yellow Jacket football team took to their homefield for the first time on Thursday, Aug. 25 to host Owen. After a delay for lightning, the game got underway and Jacket Nation got to see Hayesville successfully defend the home turf by the final of 28-8.
Tre Graves got the Jackets on the board in the first quarter with a touchdown run. In the second quarter, quarterback Peyton McGaha dropped a touchdown pass into the hands of Lance Coker for another Yellow Jacket score. Hayesville wasn't done as McGaha found Ben Bethel for a touchdown pass with just 3 seconds left in the half. The Jackets hit the halftime break up 20-0.
Hayesville found the end zone again in the fourth quarter thanks to a pass from McGaha to Graves. The pass was a simple 5-yard toss that Graves turned into a 40-yard touchdown. Owen was able to cross the goal line for a touchdown and 2-point conversion, but it was too little too late and the horn sounded, giving Hayesville a 2-0 record.
The Jackets will now enter the Smoky Mountain Conference portion of their schedule by hosting the Andrews Wildcats on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m.
Special thanks to Yellow Jacket announcer Caleb Tallman for scoring information.
