School may not be in session for Hayesville High School, but a season of competition is now underway. The JV Lady Yellow Jacket volleyball squad opened their season at home on Monday, Aug. 15 against Tuscola. It was the first match for both teams. Unfortunately for the Lady Jackets, things didn't go as planned.

In the opening set, Tuscola took advantage of miscues by the Lady Jackets to take an early lead. Hayesville finally found some momentum mid-set, but the Lady Mountaineers were able to hold off a potential rally and won the set 25-21 to go up 1-0 in the match.

Hayesville got off to a better start in the second set with early scores. However, inconsistency from the Lady Jackets coupled with solid play from Tuscola meant Hayesville was again playing from behind. Late in the set, Hayesville had some flashes of hope. Sophomore Ella Matheson was strong at the net and gave the Lady Jackets two consecutive points to make the score 21-16 in favor of the visitors.

However the surge wasn't enough and Tuscola found enough open spots on the floor to get the 25-17 set win and the 2-0 match sweep.

The Lady Jackets will try again on Tuesday, Aug.16 when they host the Lady Mustangs of Smoky Mountain. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
