The varsity Lady Yellow Jacket team entered The Hive on Tuesday, Aug. 16 looking to stay unbeaten as they welcomed Smoky Mountain. The Lady Mustangs also entered the contest with a 1-0 record after defeating Swain County on Monday, Aug. 15.

Fans were treated to an absolute thrill ride in the opening set. The two teams chased each other to the needed 25 points, exchanging score for score. With teams so evenly matched, it was evident that the end result would be a close one. That was indeed the case and unfortunately, it was Hayesville who came up short, losing 25-23.

There was no rest for the weary in set two as both teams were again evenly matched. Neither

team was able to establish momentum and the fight was intense throughout the entire set. Things were so close in fact, the traditional point total of 25 wasn't enough to claim the set. With fans on the edge of their seats, Hayesville was able to will their way to a 26-24 win to tie things up 1-1.

Set three started like the third verse to the same song. Marathon volleys increased in intensity with every hit and cheers from the stands grew louder with each return. With the teams deadlocked at 16-16, the Lady Jackets were able to find a spark to go on a run that led to a 25-19 set win. That made the score 2-1 with Hayesville needing just one more to claim the match victory.

With the way the match had gone, no lead seemed safe. The Lady Jackets started off strong to build up a lead, but Smoky Mountain wouldn't give up. Hayesville found itself just one point from the win when the Lady Mustangs started mounting a rally. You could feel the anxiety oozing from the stands as Jacket Nation begged for the final score. Finally, a big block at the net ended the set as Hayesville claimed the 25-17 set win and the 3-1 match victory.

The 2-0 Lady Jackets will try to make it three in a row Thursday, Aug. 18 as they host Franklin at 6 p.m.
