Jacket Nation filed into the stands at Frank R. Long Memorial Stadium Monday, May 9 to watch the season finale for the Lady Yellow Jacket soccer team and celebrate the senior players. Hayesville hosted Cherokee and was able to complete the season sweep with a 1-0 victory.
The Story: The first 10 minutes of the first half were pretty uneventful, but at the 29:29 mark, the Lady Jackets pumped some life into the crowd as they attacked the goal, just missing a score. Around the 18-minute mark, gameplay had gotten aggressive and a Cherokee player received a red card for an infraction. Just a few moments later, with 11:20 left in the half, a yellow card was handed out to Hayesville. The halftime horn sounded with the teams deadlocked at 0-0.
In the second half, the Lady Braves continued to challenge Hayesville with aggression, which eventually led to the Lady Jackets being awarded a penalty kick. Senior Cecilia Jones launched the kick over Cherokee's defensive line and just under the crossbar to score a goal for Hayesville with 5:08 left to play.
At the 3:44 mark, the officials again called a penalty on Cherokee. A disturbance, which initiated on the Lady Braves bench, caught the head official's attention and he went over to talk to the coach. After a few moments of discussion, Cherokee's coach began to leave the field and the official signaled that the game was over.
Key performances: Cecilia Jones, goal with 5:08 left to play. Whitley Sumpter, shutout at goalkeeper.
Coach's Comments: "It was a great win for our team," said coach Amanda Thompson. "It was a very aggressive game and I'm so proud of my girls for keeping their composure. Ultimately I think that made a big difference."
Next up: Hayesville now awaits the state playoff bracket to be released to find out their round-one fate. That bracket is set to be released Friday, May 13.
