Magnus Pedersen Named SoCon Men’s Golfer of the Week

Western Carolina fifth-year senior Magnus Pedersen was selected as the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition to this point in the fall. The weekly league honor – the first handed out by the SoCon this season – is the second of Pedersen’s career as he was first honored back in March 2021.

The SoCon's weekly award winners are selected by the conference office from nominations submitted by the sports information or media relations personnel at each institution.

Pedersen finished tied for third at the Golfweek Challenge in Pawley’s Island, S.C., which wrapped up play on Tuesday. The Moss, Norway, product posted all three rounds in the 60s including a career-low round of 66 on Sunday, followed by rounds of 67 and 68 for a tournament score of 15-under par 201.

Pederson’s 201 marks the best three-round score of his Catamount career and was just one stroke shy of matching WCU’s 54-hole individual record of 200 carded by Dylan MacQueen in 2017 and matched by Jake Peacock in 2021. All told, Pedersen had the second-best score of all golfers in the field on par-4 holes during the tournament as he had an average of 3.79.

For Pedersen, the career-best third-place tie marked his fourth career Top 10 individual finish.

Western Carolina finished the season-opening Golfweek Fall Challenge in third place in the 14-team, 80-golfer field, with a 42-under-par 822 performance. The Catamounts shot 279 in the first round, a school-record 18-hole score of 266 in the second round, and 277 in the final round.

Western Carolina returns to action Sept. 25-26 as it hosts the JT Poston Invitational at the beautiful Country Club of Sapphire Valley. The 54-hole tournament features 36 holes on Monday followed by the final round on Tuesday. WCU looks to continue its success at its home tournament after finishing second in last year's event.
