The No. 43 Georgia men’s tennis team lost to No. 26 Mississippi State by a 4-3 result on Sunday afternoon at the AJ Pitts Tennis Center.

Georgia (4-6, 0-2 SEC) was unable to capture the doubles point, which proved to be the difference as it won three of the six singles matches against Mississippi State (9-3, 1-0 SEC).

Mississippi State took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Georgia fell behind early on all three courts and could not bounce back to clinch the point. No. 37 Ryan Colby and Niels Ratiu’s 6-2 loss on court two against Carles Hernandez and Dusan Milanovic moves the pair to 9-4 on the year.

In singles action, Cyrus Mahjoob picked up the third first set for Georgia after winning three straight games on court six. Ratiu was the first match to finish, picking up his 12th win of the year after fending off three break points to earn the 6-2, 6-4 victory. Mahjoob followed with a 7-5, 6-1 win of his own, putting Georgia up in the match 2-1.

Mississippi State went on to take matches on courts three, two and five to clinch the win. The teams played out the remaining match on court one, where No. 54 Thomas Paulsell beat No. 95 Nemanja Malesevic by a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 score. This marked the second time the junior defeated Malesevic this year. Paulsell previously beat him at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Nov. 3, 2023, to earn his highest-ranked singles win when Malesevic reached No. 46 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles poll.

Georgia will return to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Friday, March 8 for a doubleheader with matches scheduled against No. 18 Alabama at 2 p.m. ET and South Carolina State at 5 p.m. Georgia is 61-7 and 3-0 against Alabama and South Carolina State respectively.
