The Young Harris College softball team traveled to South Carolina to take on Emmanuel University on Thursday (Apr. 25) evening at Tyger River Park. The Mountain Lions fell behind, 4-0 by the time the bottom of the third rolled around; by the time the third inning had ended, Hannah Carey had already hit a three-run home run to get the Mountain Lions back within one run. From there on, Young Harris would go on to score three more unanswered runs to steal a 6-4 victory from the Lions.

QUOTING HEAD COACH JESSIE HOMESLEY: "This was a great way to kick off the conference tournament. Playing a team 5 times in a season is a challenge and I am proud of the way our team fought. Grace pitched a great game and the timely home runs by Hannah Carey and Hannah Rizzuto made the difference for us."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Emmanuel put up a three spot in the top of the 1st inning, from a two RBI double by Alyssa Adams and an RBI single by Jaryn Gibson to take an early 3-0 lead.

  • Gabby Buffington drove in another run for the Lions in the top of the 3rd inning to give Emmanuel a 4-0 lead, and it did not look good for the Mountain Lions.

  • As the bottom of the third got underway, two Mountain Lions reached base with one out, Hannah Carey took advantage of the YHC opportunity and launched a three-run home run to left field to move the score to 4-3 Lions.

  • In the bottom of the fifth, lightning struck twice in the same spot, with Carey bombing another HR to tie the game at four apiece.

  • With the game tied at four in the sixth inning, Mo Johnson got on first with a base knock, and veteran catcher Hannah Rizzuto joined the home run hit parade, as she launched the go-ahead two-run home run over the wall in centerfield, which proved to be the winning runs in a 6-4 victory over the Lions.

  • Emma Black started the game for YHC, but came out early, and Grace Young came in relief of the Mountain Lions starter and exceeded expectations. Young pitched seven innings in relief, surrendering just one run, and earning a tournament game victory for Young Harris College.
