Mountain Lions listed ninth in first NCAA regional rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. | The Young Harris College baseball team is ranked No. 9 in the first release of the NCAA Division II regional rankings which came out Wednesday (April 27).

Baseball is the second Young Harris program to be ranked in the NCAA regional rankings this year in their respective sport, joining men's soccer. The ranking is the first-ever in the program's history.

There will be two more regional rankings before the final selection by the NCAA for regional play May 15. Seven teams will be selected in the Southeast region for the national tournament. In the Southeast region, the winners from the Peach Belt, South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas tournaments earn automatic berths while the other four will be at-large selections based on the regional rankings.

Young Harris (32-14) is one of three Peach Belt teams listing in the rankings. Columbus State University (33-8) is ranked No. 3, while the University of North Georgia (28-17) is seventh.

North Greenville University (38-7) is ranked No. 1 followed by Wingate University (41-6) at No. 2. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (32-13) is fourth, while Lenoir-Rhyne University (40-10) and Belmont Abbey College (30-15) comes in at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Newberry College (37-11) rounds out the regional rankings at No. 8.

The Mountain Lions return to action Friday (April 29) with a 6 p.m. Peach Belt Conference game against Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia.
