Mountain Lions open season with 17-7 win at Catawba

Behind a strong start the Young Harris College women's lacrosse team started the 2023 season with a 17-7 non-conference win over Catawba College Thursday (Feb. 9) afternoon at Shuford Stadium.


The Mountain Lions improved to 1-0, while the Catawba Indians fell to 0-1. YHC returns to the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field Saturday (Feb. 11) when they host Newberry College at 2 p.m. to start a four-game homestand.


INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

  • Young Harris jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and a 7-1 lead at the intermission. The Mountain Lions held Catawba without until there was 2:29 remaining before halftime (a total of 27:31).

  • Kinsley Purser led the Mountain Lions with four goals, while Ella Hancock and Ally Cattoni each posted three more. Emily Flynt tossed in two goals, while Mary Troyer, Belle Hardwick, Ruthie Mandell, Felisse Richard and Morgan Lewis each had one.

  • Mandell added three assists, while Troyer and Cattoni contributed two apiece. Hancock, Richard, Purser and Lewis each registered one.

  • YHC collected 16 draw controls as Purser led with six. Hancock tallied four, while Cattoni added three.

  • The Mountain Lions corralled 17 ground balls. Gwenyth Gibbons collected four, while Troyer and Hardwick added three each.

  • Young Harris caused 12 Catawba turnovers as Troyer and Hardwick forced two each.

  • Maddy Meyers picked up 16 saves between the pipes for YHC.
