Mountain Lions split matches at FMU Invitational

The Young Harris College volleyball team split two matches Friday (Sept. 9) on the opening day of the FMU Invitational hosted by Francis Marion University at the Smith University Center.


The Mountain Lions swept past Fayetteville State University 25-17, 25-18 and 25-20 in the opener. YHC won the first set against Converse University 25-19, but the Valkyries won the others 25-23, 25-17 and 25-18.


With the split, the Mountain Lions improved to 3-7. YHC wraps up tournament play Saturday (Sept. 10) with a 1 p.m. match against Francis Marion.


INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:


Fayetteville State

  • This was the second sweep of an opponent by the Mountain Lions this season.

  • Lily Hidalgo had 13 kills while hitting .565 in 23 swings. Shelby Mullins had had nine kills, while Chase Vaigneur added eight more. The Mountain Lions had 42 kills as a team as they hit a season-best .287.

  • Mollie Lawrence led the Mountain Lions with 21, while Alex Boydstone distributed 15 more.

  • Lawrence recorded nine digs, while Vaigneur and Joha Bernis each had eight.

  • Hidalgo and Mullins led YHC with two assisted blocks.

Converse

  • Vaigneur led the Mountain Lions with 15 kills, while Alex Pierre added eight more.

  • Lawrence collected 34 assists and had five service aces.

  • Bernis tallied 18 digs, while Kallee McKinney and Kori Still added 11 apiece.

  • Mullins led YHC with four total blocks (one solo, three assist) and Sophie Bearden added three assisted blocks.
