Travelers who use Old Highway 64 on a regular basis are in for a major rerouting due to maintenance work in preparation for repaving.
The road closure will begin on Monday, May 16th and will last an estimated three weeks. Clay County Division of Highways Supervisor Preston Cabe said, "The road will be closed so we can replace a crossline pipe under the road." Cabe said the segment of road which will be closed will go from Highway 64 to the first entrance of Deitz Cable Road. "We will have a detour going from Highway 69, through Cherry Road and connecting to Old 64," said Cabe.
Residents that live on the closed section of road will have access, but the road will be closed to through traffic. "We will only have the road closed during work hours which will be from 8 a.m. until 5 or 5:30 p.m. depending on what needs to be completed before the end of the day," Cabe said. "We will re-open the road for evening and overnight traffic."
Those coming from the Brasstown or Warne communities can use Beach Cove/Carter Cove to connect to Highway 64 and avoid the work zone entirely.
According to Cabe, the pipe replacement project is being done now because that section of road is scheduled for repaving starting July 1.
"We just ask for the community's patience," Cabe said. "We want to finish this project as quick as we can, but we want to make sure it's done right."
