The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the theft of three Harris/Walz political signs from the Hayesville traffic circle, following a criminal complaint received today. This incident mirrors a similar theft that occurred on June 19, 2023, involving signs of the same political party.
The Sheriff's Office emphasized their commitment to identifying, arresting, and prosecuting those responsible, as they did in the previous case. Sheriff Mark Buchanan stated that the Sheriff's Office takes these thefts seriously, and he is dedicating resources to ensure that the individual behind this will be held accountable.
Sheriff Mark Buchanan urged the perpetrator to return the signs to a visible location. He also stressed the importance of maintaining respect during the election process, noting that "violence, threats, damage, and theft have no place in our election process, especially here in Clay County, which the Sheriff referred to as "our little mountain paradise."
The Sheriff added that while political debates between neighbors and friends are common, these differences should never lead to legal violations or damaged relationships.
The Sheriff's Office remains determined to resolve the case and has warned that they will not underestimate the seriousness of this theft.
