Progress being made on Appalachian Veterans Memorial Park
By Derek Nagel
It is with great pleasure that the committee of the AVMP project announce the upcoming addition of the Appalachian Veterans Memorial Park to Meeks Park located in the mountains of north Georgia, at 490 Meeks Park Rd in Blairsville, GA.
Earlier this year, Union County’s Sole Commissioner, Lamar Paris, gifted a one-acre tract of land inside of Meeks Park to be used to build the park on the behalf of the county. Commissioner Paris, along with City Manager Larry Garrett, have been instrumental in providing support to the committee to build the park, and we thank them for their time and dedication to this momentous project.
The park will sit on approximately one acre of land, and be adorned by a 60’ diameter compass rose, featuring branch service monuments representing every branch of the United States’ military, as well as monuments recognizing all of the Veterans Service Organizations in the area. We are pleased to have the participation of UGA’s agricultural center which is also located in Union County. All of the landscaping for the park will be laid out and installed by the students of this location, and the concrete work will be performed by local vendor Ben’s Concrete Creations, a company that specializes in “artistic” concrete design and acid staining.
The committee, along with our local vendors, plan on breaking ground for this exciting project some time in Q4 of 2022. We are currently seeking corporate sponsorships to build the park, as well as donations by the community at large. Although the park will be located in Blairsville in Union County, it is intended to be enjoyed by all who visit the Appalachian Mountains.
