Sheriff Warns Of New Scam In The Area

Press Release

A new take on existing scams has been reported here in Clay County. In this case a young man who does yard work was contacted VIA text by the “owner” of a home that is for sale. The house in question is for sale by a legitimate owner and listed through many different web sites.

This “owner” is out of town and cannot meet in person to get the work done. This “owner” wanted the young man to travel to the house and give a quote for mowing the yard, trimming bushes, and cleaning out the gutters.

Once the quote is given, this “owner” sent a typed company check from New Orleans for several thousands more than the quote was for the work to be done. This “owner” then asks the young man to cash the check, keep extra money for himself, and pay painters he has coming to work on the inside of the house.

At this point “the painter” starts sending texts to the young man and wants his money forwarded to him VIA Apple Pay or cashapp. In this particular case the young man knew this to be a scam early on never cashed “the owner’s” check which of course was worthless.
