Stray Strike in Poland

1411 Digest

Two people were killed yesterday when a missile landed in Poland, a NATO member, prompting a security crisis meeting in Warsaw. The strike set off alarms within NATO member countries and came as Russia renewed its broad attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, its largest one-day missile barrage to date. Polish officials claimed the missile was Russian-made; Russia denied any involvement. As of early this morning, preliminary reports suggest the explosion may have been linked to Ukrainian defenses attempting to knock down incoming Russian missiles. At least 85 air-to-surface cruise missiles damaged power plants throughout Ukraine yesterday, with dozens successfully intercepted by air defense units. The attacks took place as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for peace at this week's G-20 summit in Bali during a virtual speech. The latest attack followed Ukraine's recapture of Kherson late last week. Russia has ceded over half of the territory it gained since February, while sabotaging key infrastructure as its forces retreat.
