Tough season opener for HMS Lady Jacket basketball team

On Thursday, Nov. 10, the Lady Yellow Jackets hosted Hiwasssee Dam / Ranger for the first basketball game of the season. Even in a low scoring affair, fans were on the edge of their seats as the clock ticked down. When the horn sounded, the Lady Jackets were on the wrong end of a 23-22 score.

Defense was the name of the game from the opening tip-off. HDR managed to end the opening quarter up slightly, 6-4.

Quarter two saw the Lady Jackets struggle to find the bottom of the basket. A lone bucket from Ava Moore boosted Hayesville's score to 6, but HDR used 4 points to grow their lead to 10-6 by halftime.

After some adjustments made during the break, Hayesville's offense came out firing in the third quarter. Four Lady Jackets made successful shots for 8 points. Their opponents managed just 3 points, giving Hayesville a 14-13 lead going into the final quarter.

The Lady Jackets kept up their pace in the push for a victory, rattling the rim for 8 additional points in the fourth. Unfortunately, HDR was able to rally with just enough on offense to snag the 23-22 win.

"We didn't shoot well from the floor or the foul line," said head coach Tammy Dills. "Hopefully first game jitters are over and players will settle down in their roles."

Leaders vs HDR
