Two WCU Football Games Selected as Ingles SoCon Game of the Week

By Daniel K. Hooker
Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations
Western Carolina football will be featured in a pair of linear television broadcasts this season as a part of the “Ingles Southern Conference Game of the Week,” which was announced Monday morning just days ahead of the league’s annual football media day in Asheville.
Western Carolina’s mid-October matchup against chromatic conference rival, Furman (Oct. 15) at Paladin Stadium in Greenville, S.C., and the Nov. 5 Homecoming game against the Wofford Terriers at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field in Cullowhee are both slated to be picked up as the league’s premier match-up of the day.
Nexstar Broadcasting, Inc., Ingles Markets, and the SoCon continue the ongoing broadcast partnership with plans for eight scheduled broadcasts of conference matchups beginning on Saturday, Sept. 10, when defending regular-season champion ETSU travels to the South Carolina Lowcountry to face The Citadel. The final two weeks of the regular season – Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 – feature a pair of wildcard selections for the remaining two package games and will be chosen 10-to-14 days ahead of the game dates.
The games will be broadcast throughout the league’s six-state footprint through a network of
Nexstar stations. Each league school will appear at least once during the eight scheduled seasonal games and will also air concurrently through ESPN+ (paid subscription required).
“We value our partnership with Nexstar Broadcasting that has grown our regional over-the-air station coverage of SoCon football in the Southeast,” SoCon Commissioner Jim Schaus said. “This should be a great telecast schedule for 2022.”
Nexstar affiliates with the opportunity to air games are: ECBD (Charleston), WMYT (Charlotte), WWCW (Lynchburg/Roanoke) and WYCW (Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville). Although not a Nexstar station, WMUB (Macon), Mercer University Broadcasting, will also air select contests.
The 2022 Southern Conference Football Media Day is scheduled for Thursday, July 28, at the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N.C. The preseason all-conference team from the league’s head coaches and both official preseason polls will be unveiled as a part of the annual event. The full day of activity kicks off with conference meetings and a media luncheon where NFL Hall of Famer – and former Chattanooga Mocs standout – Terrell Owens is slated to be the keynote speaker. Interview segments with each of the league’s nine head coaches will also be broadcast on ESPN+ (paid subscription required).
