Coming off a shared team championship in match play at the Sweetens Cove Intercollegiate, Western Carolina men’s golf returns to action in its final tune-up before the Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Wofford Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday.
Hosted by fellow SoCon-member Terriers, the two-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at the par-71, 6,683-yard Catawba Country Club in Hickory, N.C. Monday opens with a 9 a.m. shotgun start and features 36 continuous holes with the final round slated for Tuesday.
In addition to the Catamounts and the host Terriers, the 13-team field includes Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, Francis Marion, Gardner-Webb, George Washington, Georgia State, Queens University, Richmond, Samford, South Carolina, and USC Aiken. Furman is also sending a pair of individuals to cap the field.
Six Catamounts will compete in the three-round, two-day event on Monday and Tuesday with one individual joining the scoring five. Fifth-year senior Magnus Pedersen leads the Catamounts into the penultimate event of the season. The Moss, Norway, product ranks fifth in the SoCon in scoring average with a team-best 71.13 mark. He’s flanked by sophomore Ivan Ninkovic and senior Pablo Hernandez, who rank 15th and 25th, respectively, in the league’s scoring ledgers.
Rounding out the Catamount lineup are freshmen Jace Butcher and Andrew Korytoski, both playing in their eighth career events this season. Redshirt freshman Josh Lendach will vie for the individual championship unattached this week.
WCU’s scoring five will be paired with golfers from Georgia State and Richmond with Monday’s 9 a.m. shotgun start, beginning the event between holes No. 4 through No. 7.
“Coming off our match play win and a good week of work, we are excited to get after it on our final prep for the SoCon Championship,” said WCU head coach Tim Eckberg. “I love this old Donald Ross course we are playing this week. It’s quirky, fun, with good green complexes – it should be a fun test for the guys.”
