WCU’s Jones on Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-America Team

By Daniel Hooker

Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations

Western Carolina football sophomore Calvin Jones was today listed on the Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-America team. Jones was selected to the third team as a kick returner after pacing the Southern Conference in that statistical category a season ago.

Jones, a second-team preseason All-SoCon selection at return specialist announced last week at the annual Southern Conference Media Day, was among 13 players from the conference to earn a selection on the Stats Perform FCS 2022 Preseason All-America team. Five from the SoCon landed on the first team, followed by four on the second and four on the third team.

A product of Forest City, N.C., Jones collected second-team postseason All-Southern Conference plaudits as a kick returner as a second-year freshman in 2021 after leading the SoCon with a 31.1 yards per return average – the second-best overall average in the NCAA FCS, trailing just Isaiah Bolden of Jackson State (16-for-591, 36.9 avg). Jones was dubbed a Freshman All-American by HERO Sports and twice honored by Phil Steele as a first-team All-America kick returner and a third-team wide receiver selection.

Jones amassed 1,254 all-purpose yards in 2021 including 651 receiving, 590 on kickoff returns, and 13 yards rushing over 11 games played for an average of 114.0 yards per game, fifth in the league.
