WCU’s Woolbright Secures Seventh SoCon Player of the Week Honor

Vonterius Woolbright continues to etch his name into the Western Carolina men’s basketball record books this season as he today collected his school-recorded seventh Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor for games played Jan. 22-28. The 6-6 senior guard nearly averaged a triple-double between the two games last week, posting 26 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists per game for the Catamounts.

Woolbright is just one of two players in the SoCon with multiple weekly awards this season, collecting his seventh honor from the conference office while also marking the seventh of his WCU career. He is now just one weekly award shy of matching Davidson’s Stephen Curry who holds the record with eight weekly awards back in the 2008-09 season.

In addition to his seven weekly plaudits, Woolbright has also earned both of the league’s Player of the Month honors for November and December. Of note, Woolbright has now secured three of the five weekly awards handed out in January.

The conference office selects and announces the SoCon's weekly award winners from nominations submitted by the sports information or media relations personnel at each institution.

Woolbright recorded his second triple-double of the season – and the program-record third of his WCU career – last week in helping the Catamounts go to a 1-1 week including a tough overtime loss to UNCG in the midweek and a 25-point home victory over VMI last Saturday. All told, Woolbright finished with 52 points, 28 rebounds, and 16 assists on the week, extending his streak to 13 straight double-double efforts to add to his NCAA-leading 18 double-double performances this season.

A product of Albany, Ga., Woolbright finished a point shy of matching his single-game career-high with 34 points in the overtime loss to UNCG last Wednesday, adding five rebounds and six assists. It was his second 30-point effort of the season and the fourth of his WCU career. Last Saturday, Woolbright collected his third career triple-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists in the win over VMI. It’s the second straight season he tallied the triple-dip against the Keydets. He is also just one of three players in the NCAA with multiple triple-doubles this season.

Woolbright continues to lead the SoCon in scoring (21.5 ppg) and rebounding (12.8 rpg), while also now ranking second in the league in assists (5.6 apg). Nationally, Woolbright’s scoring average ranks him eighth overall while also sitting second in the country in rebounding. Among his nearly 13 boards per game, Woolbright continues to pace the nation in defensive rebounding with 10.24 defensive boards per game – the only player in the NCAA averaging average double-figures on the defensive glass.

Western Carolina (16-5, 5-3 SoCon) concludes a three-game homestand on Wednesday night as the Catamounts welcome SoCon-foe Chattanooga (14-7, 6-2 SoCon) to Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center for a 7 p.m. start. The Mocs enter the week tied for second in the league standings with WCU sitting amidst a three-way tie for fourth place at the midpoint of conference play. Wednesday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with live streaming audio from the Catamount Sports Network and live stats available online at
