WCU Women’s Soccer Opens Road Trip Wednesday at Winthrop

Unbeaten through its first two matches including a road win at mountain-rival UNC Asheville and a scoreless draw against Queens in its home opener on Sunday, the Western Carolina women’s soccer team hits the road for a pair of matches beginning with a Wednesday visit to Winthrop. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with live stats available via a link on CatamountSports.com.

The Catamounts (1-0-1) outshot Queens by an 18-4 margin but were stymied by the Queens defense and held off the scoreboard. Milla Syska attempted a team-best three shots with five players taking two shots each. Leanne Trudel recorded her second straight shutout as she recorded a pair of saves.

Winthrop earned a 1-1 draw with The Citadel in its season opener on Sunday evening thanks to a goal by freshman Sophia Balliet in the 89th minute. Senior goalkeeper Izzy Giarrizzi made three saves as she faced 10 Bulldog shots.

Wednesday’s match marks the sixth all-time meeting between the Catamounts and Eagles with WCU holding a 4-0-1 record. The teams haven’t met since a 3-1 Catamount win in Rock Hill during the 2016 season.

WCU remains on the road for its longest trip of the season on Sunday, making the 450-mile trek to UT Martin for a 2 p.m. Eastern contest.
