Weather Prompts Changes to First Pitch Schedule

Unfavorable weekend weather forecasts across the Upstate of South Carolina have prompted officials with both the tournament host Michigan State and the venue host Greenville Drive to alter this weekend’s schedule for the First Pitch Invitational at Fluor Field.

The originally scheduled three-day event will now span four days beginning on Thursday, March 7, with an altered and reduced schedule of games through Sunday. Each game and the anticipated coverage remain subject to change based on weather.

Western Carolina’s original slate of four games in tournament action has been reduced to three games, facing each of the other three teams in the four-team event. On the amended calendar, the Catamounts now face VCU and former assistant coaches Bradley LeCroy – now the Rams’ head coach – and Andrew Cox on Thursday, March 7, at 6 p.m. in the event’s opening day nightcap.

Following an off-day on Friday where only one game is scheduled, the Catamounts now meet the host Michigan State Spartans at 7 p.m. in the day’s lone scheduled contest. Tournament play is now scheduled to conclude on Sunday, March 10, with a 10 a.m. meeting with Western Michigan.

Each game in Greenville is slated to be broadcast on the Drive's YouTube channel, with links to available live stats online at CatamountSports.com.

Western Carolina (4-8) and VCU (8-4) meet for the sixth time on the baseball diamond this week with the Catamounts trailing in the series, 2-3. Thursday’s game is the first between the Catamounts and Rams since a pair of neutral field games at McNair Field in Forest City, N.C., back in 2018, both won by VCU for the current two-game win streak.

After Friday’s rescheduled off-day, the Catamounts and host Michigan State (4-7) rekindle their recent head-to-head series, meeting for the sixth time – each coming since 2019 and all at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. The Spartans have won the last four meetings over the Catamounts as WCU trails in the series, 1-4.

In Sunday morning’s finale, WCU meets Western Michigan (7-5) at 10 a.m. in the first series meeting between the two programs on the baseball diamond.
