Yellow Jacket soccer gets tie with Cherokee

The Hayesville High School soccer team got the season going this week with a pair of matches. While the opening contest was unfortunate, the week's final event was very encouraging to Jacket Nation.

On Wednesday, Sept. 9 the Yellow Jackets opened the season at home by hosting Blue Ridge Early College. All offense in the match belonged to the Bobcats, with Blue Ridge netting 4 goals in the first half and 2 in the second to get the 6-0 shutout win over Hayesville.

Kevin Kleckner and Jesus Martinez each had a shot on goal for the Yellow Jackets and Hayesville goal keeper Connor Rexroad recorded 17 saves at the net.

The next day, Hayesville travelled to Cherokee looking to avoid an 0-2 start to the season. Thanks to junior Isaac Chandler, the Jackets took an early lead with a first-half goal. Cherokee answered in the second half with a goal of their own.

Time ran out, forcing overtime. In the bonus time, neither team could find the back of the net. Officials called the match, giving Hayesville the 1-1 tie.

Next up for the team is an away match on Monday, Sept. 12 against Highlands at 6 p.m.
