Yellow Jackets Advance To Round Two

On Tuesday, May 7th, the Hayesville High School baseball team began it's quest for a state championship by hosting the Bethany Wolves in round one of the NCHSAA tournament. Things looked bleak for a bit after Bethany went up 4-0 in the first inning. Hayesville's "refuse to lose" attitude meant the Jackets kept fighting. A 6-run sixth inning blew the game open, giving Hayesville an 11-5 lead. In the top of the seventh, Bethany had a runner on third with one out. A deep fly ball to right field was tracked down by Hayesville's Kyle Shaheen. The runner tagged and headed home only to be met by catcher Dawson Devane who applied the tag after a rocket of a throw from Shaheen to end the game. And yes, the crowd went wild.

Inside the Hive:

Cade Caruso: 1-2, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, stolen base

Chance Hughes: 3-4, RBI, 2 runs scored, stolen base

Payton McGaha: 1-2, RBI, 2 runs scored, stolen base

Jackson Sellers: 6 innings pitched, 4 earned runs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts

Hayesville, who is seeded as the number 7 team, will host number 23 seed Mountain Heritage in round two of the tournament on Friday, May 10.
