Yellow Jackets' Season Ends in Round One

On Tuesday, Feb. 27, the Yellow Jacket varsity basketball team hit the road to take on Eastern Randolph in the first round of the NCHSAA state tournament. Things looked good for Hayesville early, but quickly dwindled as the Jackets lost 83-50, ending their season.

In the first quarter, Hayesville put up an impressive 19 points which was good enough for a 3-point lead by quarter's end. Things changed in the second quarter as Eastern Randolph was to contain the Jackets' attack while also solidifying their own offensive plan. By halftime, ERHS had built up a 42-30 lead, a foundation they would continue to build on in the second half.

Quarter three was the worst for Hayesville as the Jackets managed just 7 points while the home team netted 22. When all was said and done, Hayesville's game, tournament and season ended with the 83-50 loss.

Scoring leaders:

Luke Lee: 15 points

Isaac Chandler: 10 points

Jackson Sellers: 10 points

Jacob McClure: 6 points

The Jackets end the season with a 13-15 record. It was a frustrating season for Hayesville as they often found themselves with a chance to win games, but just couldn't get over the hump. A season highlight came in the Smoky Mountain Conference tournament with a run to the championship game.

With the loss of six seniors, next years team will have a totally different look, but no doubt will possess the same hunger as all Hayesville teams.
