On Saturday, September 7, at 2 p.m., the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (1-0) will welcome the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (0-1) to Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium for their 2024 home opener. The game marks the beginning of Georgia’s campaign to extend its impressive streak of success on their home turf.
Sanford Stadium, which underwent a two-phase renovation in 2023-24, now boasts a slightly increased capacity of 93,033, maintaining its status as the ninth-largest on-campus stadium in the nation. Among the key updates is a new Press Box situated on levels 4 and 5 at the west end of the Sky Suites on the stadium’s south side, replacing the historic Dan Magill Press Box from 1967. The field-level Frank Lumpkin Media Center remains unchanged, continuing to serve as the primary workspace and hospitality area for media and coaches.
The Bulldogs have been formidable in home openers, winning their last 12 consecutive games. Georgia's track record for opening games remains stellar, with a recent 34-3 victory over No. 14 Clemson extending their streak of season-opening wins to 11. Under Coach Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs have not only continued this trend but have also been dominant in ranked matchups, holding a 10-3 record in such games.
Tennessee Tech, led by new head coach Bobby Wilder, enters the game following a narrow 32-25 defeat against Middle Tennessee State. Despite a valiant effort and a near upset of the Blue Raiders, the Golden Eagles were unable to secure a win in their season opener.
Historically, Georgia has dominated its series with Tennessee Tech, holding a 2-0 advantage with decisive victories of 67-0 in 1943 and 38-0 in 2009, both games played in Athens.
As the Bulldogs prepare to take on the Golden Eagles, all eyes will be on Georgia's continued quest for dominance and the celebration of their newly renovated home stadium.
