A traffic stop conducted by Clay County law enforcement on the night of November 7 led to a major drug and weapons seizure, resulting in the arrest of 49-year-old William David Ledford from Blairsville, GA.
The incident occurred around 9:43 p.m. on US Highway 64 East, where Investigator Nick Queen pulled over a black Mercury sedan driven by Ledford, who was known to be a convicted felon in Georgia. Sergeant Steven Smith and his K-9 partner, Luca, arrived to assist, and Luca quickly alerted officers to a camouflage backpack hidden beneath the front bumper of the vehicle. Inside, officers found a substantial quantity of a white crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine.
As the investigation continued, Lieutenant Tyler Faggard arrived to lend further support. During a search, officers found a small bag of suspected methamphetamine in Ledford’s breast pocket, along with a smoking device containing green liquid. Inside the car, law enforcement recovered a stolen .22 rifle and a semi-automatic 9mm pistol.
The substance in the backpack field-tested positive for methamphetamine, weighing approximately 128.53 grams. Ledford faces multiple felony charges, including two counts of Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Possession with Intent to Sell or Deliver Methamphetamine, and Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. He is currently held without bond at the Clay County Detention Center.
This arrest highlights ongoing law enforcement efforts to disrupt drug trafficking and reduce illegal weapons possession within the region.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
