Press Release

On 02/02/25 an unusual scam was reported to Clay County Sheriff’s Officer Drew Judge. A 22-year-old man from Brasstown reported that around the first of November 2024 he was using a social media app when someone representing themselves to be a female messaged him to reply to a phone number.

Once he sent a text to this phone number, an unsolicitedreply came back with explicit pictures. The next day he received a phone call from a “police officer” from a phone number indicating the caller was from Greenville, SC. The “police officer” said the female he had sent the text to was a minor and had tried to commit suicide. The officer told him that if he paid for the minor to be placed in a mental institution there would be no criminal charges taken against him. From around the first of November 2024 until present, the man sent money through Apple Pay in amounts ranging from $100 to $500 and totaling approximately $3000. During this time, he was called by several different “police officers” who were male and female with American accents.

Finally, after being threatened with arrest, he decided to make a report of these activities to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. An investigation into this matter is continuing.

Please know that even local phone numbers from callers can be from anywhere, even worldwide. Never send money to anyone that randomly contacts you by phone, email, social media, etc.True law enforcement officers, regardless of the agency they work for, will NEVER ask you to send them monies in exchange for not being charged with a crime.
